New trojan infects audio files and spreads if they're shared

Posted By: CiTay @ Jul 17 2008, 15:18
A new trojan horse malware is being reported in the wild that infects MP3, WMA and WMV files. It secretly converts MP3 files to the WMA format while keeping the MP3 file extension and adding a special WMA tag that asks the user to install a supposedly missing audio codec. When the user downloads and installs the fake missing codec, the trojan horse sets a registry key that disables the "missing codec" popup, making it seem as if the installation was successful. Meanwhile, it's silently infecting all those media files it can find on that PC, including converting all MP3s to WMA and adding that special tag. Windows Media Player does not mind the wrong extension and plays them back normally.

When those files are shared, they will display the "missing codec" ... [more]

dBpoweramp Release 13

Posted By: spoon @ Jun 2 2008, 03:07
Major Changes

CD Ripper is enhanced by the addition of 3 new meta data providers (GD3, MusicBrainz & TrackType), GD3 offers album art up to 500x500 pixels. These new providers allowed for the creation of PerfectMeta™. Note-worthy additions:
  • CD Ripper is able to scan / paste / load album art files
  • HTOA ripping (hidden first track ripping),
  • Defective by design Ripping,
  • Added 'Track Technical' column will show if CD is HDCD (install DSP Effects to rip as 24 bit), or has Pre-Emphasis set
  • Wave: Compatible with 'id3 ' chunk ID Tags

PerfectMeta™

PerfectMeta™ uses 4 Internet meta data providers simultaneously, this allows any inevitable errors, such as spelling mistakes to be self corrected. In addition, there are 100's of internal rule sets to ensure that the metadata returned is consistent across discs & providers. Last year Illustrate were proud and confident R12 issued in a new era of secure-rippers (securest of the secure), R13 offers the best metadata solution obtainable today.

Reference R13 also includes: CD Writer and Batch Ripper. CD Writer allows for burning of audio CDs, whilst Batch Ripper is designed for those with large collections to rip (and commercial Ripping houses).
